Media Matching Day (MMD)

Media Matchmaking Day

Tuesday, June 18, 2024 in New York City

Media Matchmaking Day (MMD) is BAM's event that brings together our journalist and venture communities. The "speed dating" format enables founders to meet multiple journalists within a brief two-hour window. This structure provides ample practice on building media relationships, refining messaging for a media audience, and being a media source.

When

Tuesday, June 18, 2024

4:00 - 4:30 pm:
Drinks and appetizers

4:30 - 6:30 pm:
Media Matchmaking rounds, 8 in total

6:30 pm:
Conversation wrap-up and depart

WHO

We invite Founders of Series A and above venture-backed tech startups and top-tier media to attend.

To curate a good experience for everyone, we specifically focus on the healthcare, sustainability, workplace, venture and deep tech industries.

Where

In-person in NYC. Exact location to follow.

Our Approach

BAM selects attendees for Media Matchmaking Day based on a number of qualifications, but all MMD attendees are:

MEDIA READY

We are looking for Founders and VCs that are prepared to speak with media. This means your messaging is finalized and you have exciting news coming up in the next six months.

Forward Thinkers

Media Matchmaking Day is intended to create introductions and foster relationships. Attendees should be ready to speak to their area of expertise and offer themselves as a resource for journalists — without expecting direct coverage in return.

Series A and Beyond

We are only accept startups that are Series A or beyond, or that have Series A funding anticipated within the next six months. Seed and pre-seed are too early for media of this caliber.

FAQs

What about the media’s contact info? Will I get that after the event?

Yes, we will send the media’s emails to attendees after the event. There is no need to try to get their emails when you sit down with them for 10 minutes.

How do I make a good impression with a reporter?

Be a human is the first suggestion. Your 10 minutes with each shouldn’t be a monologue about how great your company is. Make it a dialogue and be interested in the reporter's work. Secondly, ask how you can be of help and have some ideas! Do you have data, reports, amazing board members, fellow peers, etc that pertain to the reporter’s beat? Share that.

How many rounds of “speed dating” will occur?

There will be 8 rounds between 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm.

Can I bring my PR person?

No. Because of space restrictions, we can only have one person per company represented.

What is BAM’s code of conduct for this event?
  1. (1) Expect Magic: Sit with a reporter or meet a founder who you may think you have nothing in common with. Who knows where it will lead.

  2. (2) Greet with Grace: Everyone here is busy, brilliant, and probably Type A. Thank anyone you connect with for their time and attention, and give the same.

  3. (3) Relationships, not Transactions: No one wants to get sold to so don’t hawk your company to anyone, including fellow founders. MMD is about making relationships, and relationships take time.

What should I wear?

Business casual is encouraged.

Should I bring materials, business cards, etc?

We don’t suggest that. Just bring yourself and great energy.
