Dear BAMf // Episode 11: Vincent Touati-Tomas of Northzone answers tricky questions about how to ignite passion even when you're not so passionate about your job.

We're kicking off August with episode eleven of the Dear BAMf podcast. In this episode, we spoke to Vincent Touati-Tomas, Director of Marketing & Communications at Northzone. Vincent’s career in tech started in 2011 when he was still in school running a podcast about digital policies. Vincent then worked as an independent marketing consultant in the tech events industry. He gave some honest advice for people who feel stuck in their current role, like this person who asked:

Dear BAMf,

I'm feeling a bit uninspired. I'm hearing and seeing all kinds of startups working on climate change, robots that help keep people safe, healthcare startups that are, frankly, saving people's lives and I'm at an agency that solely represents niche insurance and fintech brands that pretty much help people get rich or squeeze out a few more dollars of profit. What should I do? Search for another job right now in the midst of COVID-19? My agency has been relatively stable so I'm still thankful that I have my job. Still, I can't stop thinking about getting to a place where the work I do will seem to matter a lot more.

Listen now to hear Vincent and Beck discuss this (very understandable) challenge and his message for people looking for inspiration at an uninspiring job.

Dear BAMf: Episode 11

Episode 11 highlights:

  • (02:56) Beck and Vincent discuss the general industry misunderstanding that marketing pros can "do it all" — PR, media, content, events, SEO, etc. — and how to communicate this with stakeholders who think they don't need to hire for marketing specialization.
  • (07:37) Vincent gives three pieces of advice for building internal trust in order to suggest tactics that will work.
  • (11:00) Why continuing to building authentic relationships with press contacts even when you don't have news to share is critical.
  • (19:00) Vincent gives advice to someone looking for more inspiration in their current marketing role. "We need everyone — we cannot all become entrepreneurs."
